Just 38 days to go before I turn 40. Years ago, I thought that you should be especially kind to people approaching 40 as they surely must be feeling wretched. Now I'm there, I feel fantastic about it. Mind you, when I was 11, I felt a bit sorry for the
girls in the sixth form. As far as I was concerned, they were 'proper,
grown-up women' and didn't really belong in a school. Funny how our
perception of 'age' changes as we grow older.
At the end of the eighties/early nineties, it was considered 'ill-advised' for the thinking man to marry before he was 30. Not ready to settle down yet or something. And everyone knew that, male or female, at 30 you had to stop wearing fashionable clothes and having fun, and get serious! I met my first husband at the age of 21. Life for me was all 15%+ interest rates, civilised dinner parties and putting his career first. I had my first mid life crisis at the age of 26 - and I'm so glad I did, because I got to start all over again!
